OSI Systems Advanced Body Scanners to Be Deployed at Heathrow and Manchester International Airports in the United Kingdom

HAWTHORNE, Calif., Feb 09, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- OSI Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: OSIS), a vertically integrated provider of specialized electronic products for critical applications in the Security and Healthcare industries, today announced Rapiscan Systems has deployed its Advanced Imaging Technology Secure 1000 Single Pose body scanners at Heathrow and Manchester International Airports in the United Kingdom.

The deployments follow the announcement by the UK Department for Transport (DfT) that it will use the Advanced Imaging Technology systems in wake of the failed terrorist incident on Northwest Airlines Flight 253 on December 25, 2009. The mandate calls for the use of these systems in airports in the United Kingdom for the screening of passengers. The Secure 1000 Single Pose's industry-leading throughput should assist the processing of passengers at Heathrow and Manchester Airport, two of the world's busiest airports.

OSI Systems Chairman and CEO, Deepak Chopra, stated: "We are pleased to be working closely with Heathrow Airport and Manchester Airport to deploy the Advanced Imaging Systems in accordance with the new DfT requirements. Since the beginning of the year, international interest in the Rapiscan Secure 1000 Single Pose has increased significantly as we are one of only two qualified vendors by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration for such systems. Our global manufacturing and supply resources enables us to meet the increased demand for this product while continuing to meet the needs of our customers for our complete range of security and inspection systems."

Mr. Ajay Mehra, President of Rapiscan Systems, commented: "We believe the Secure 1000 Single Pose is particularly well suited for the needs of high throughput airports such as Heathrow and Manchester. Its backscatter technology provides significant detection benefits, while at the same time it offers the best passenger throughput of any available screening system."

The Secure 1000 Single Pose has been approved by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration and is currently being deployed at airports in the U.S. The Secure 1000 Single Pose uses advanced backscatter technology and proprietary image processing software to rapidly detect potential threats on passengers at aviation checkpoints. The Secure 1000 Single Pose is designed to help screeners detect potential threat objects concealed on passengers. Using backscatter imaging technology and proprietary image processing software, the system offers advantages over alternatives such as metal detectors and hand searches, because it can rapidly help screeners comprehensively detect non-metallic threats and explosives, as well as metal objects. In addition, the system, which complies with all U.S. government passenger privacy and safety requirements, is configured to improve overall checkpoint efficiency: to complete the scan, a passenger faces the Secure 1000 Single Pose while front and back scans are generated and within seconds, a computer-aided image is presented for inspection, thereby streamlining the screening process.
